1/23/2023 0 Comments Defending the doctrine of Perspicuity of Scripture, and Dispelling the false dichotomy between its Perspicuity and the interpretive authority of Bible teachersWhat is Perspicuity? It is the biblical doctrine that the word of God CAN be understood in a meaningful, clear way, and hence all hearers of God’s word bear the responsibility to respond with faith and obedience. This is always the case whenever the word of God is proclaimed in the Bible, that the hearers so clearly understand the message that God holds them responsible for how they respond.
Then why are people said to be UNABLE to understand or obey God’s word (e.g. Mt 13:11-16; Jn 8:43; Ro 8:7; 1Co 2:14)? It is NOT because of the sinner’s INTELLECTUAL INABILITY to process the information that is communicated to them, BUT because of their MORAL INABILITY to respond to God’s word with faith and obedience.
So if all people CAN intellectually understand and process information and study the Scripture themselves, then why do the believers need teachers? That is because:
What makes one qualified to have an interpretive authority? The qualification of a teacher is not one of sheer authority propped up by some systematic religion simply because the religion demands such an authority. The qualification is that of COMPETENCE, plain and simple. That is why:
